The Postgraduate Program in Genetics and Improvement began in August 1976 at the master’s level. The doctoral program began in March 1979. The master’s degree was accredited in 1980 (CFE / CESu number 317/1980), and doctorate in 1982 (opinion of CFE / CESu number 01/1982). The programs were recredited in 1988 (opinions of the CFE / CESu numbers 163/1988 and 550/1988).

Until 1997, the program always obtained concept A, according to CAPES evaluations, and in the 1998/2000, 2001/2003 and 2007-2010 three-year periods, it obtained concept 7. It obtained concept 6, still excellently, in the 2004-2006 and 2011- 2013. From 2013 until now, the evaluation became quadrennial and the concept obtained was again the maximum, 7 (Excellence with international insertion).
